FILE PHOTO

Residents are being warned to watch out for severe thunderstorms today in the the North Thompson.

The thunderstorms may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain, according to Environment Canada.

So far this year, 47% of the wildfires in B.C. have been caused by lightning strikes.

Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops as well as heavy downpours that can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads, according to the weather agency.

Watches are issued by Environment Canada when atmospheric conditions are favourable for thunderstorms that can produce: large hail, damaging winds and/or torrential rainfall.

Heat warnings are also in effect for the Thompson Okanagan region.

To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.
