KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Thompson and Shuswap regions.

The national weather agency says conditions are favourable for dangerous thunderstorms that are capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop later today, June 13, and move east to southeast, according to an alert from Environment Canada.

The storms will persist until late this evening.

“Some of these thunderstorms may become severe with the main threats of heavy downpours and large hail,” the alert says.

Strong gusts of wind are possible, especially across open areas such as large lakes.

Environment Canada reminds the public large hail can damage property and cause injury. Heavy downpours can also cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
