NORTH OKANAGAN - Emergency crews raced to the scene of a serious car crash Tuesday evening near Westside Road that claimed one life.

A collision between two vehicles, a Honda SUV and a Chevrolet pick-up truck, occurred around 5:30 p.m. yesterday, Sept. 20, at Highway 97 and Westside Road, Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says in a media release.

It appears the Honda, which was carrying three women, turned left onto Highway 97 from Westside Road, into the path of an eastbound pickup truck.

The Chevrolet struck the driver's side of the Honda, resulting in serious injuries to the 18-year-old woman driver from Kamloops, Moskaluk says.

A 54-year-old Kamloops woman in the front seat was transported in critical condition via air ambulance to the hospital in Kamloops.

A 55-year-old Kamloops woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The male driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was uninjured but shaken,” Moskaluk says.

The RCMP Traffic Analyst along with Okanagan Indian Band Fire Services and Vernon Fire and Rescue attended to extricate the women from the SUV.

The crash resulted in Highway 97 being closed in both directions for some time.

The investigation is ongoing.
