VICTORIA - Searchers are looking for a small aircraft with two people on board that has gone missing in British Columbia.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria says the Cessna 182 left Calgary at about 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28, on a route to Kelowna, Hope and Boundary Bay in B.C. with a planned stop in Nanaimo.

The centre says it was alerted at about an hour after the plane left Calgary by an electronic locator transmitter that had been activated about 90 nautical miles northeast of Vancouver.

A Buffalo aircraft and a Cormorant Helicopter from Canadian Forces Base Comox were sent out to search for signs of the aircraft, but the centre said that effort was being hampered by low clouds and rain.

JRCC Victoria said the active search covers an area from Merritt to Hope and was being assisted by the RCMP and a Hope-based search and rescue squad.
