NORTH OKANAGAN - Police and Vernon Search and Rescue are searching Mabel Lake today for an overdue kayaker.
Leigh Pearson, with Vernon Search and Rescue, says they were called in to assist the RCMP last night, July 18, around 9:30 p.m. after a kayaker did not return as expected.
RCMP say in a news release that 58-year-old John Keeley left his home at roughly 1:30 p.m. yesterday, and was supposed to return by dinner time. When he didn't return, he was reported missing.
According to the release, police responded to the Mabel Lake area and found Keeley's locked vehicle near the 22-kilometre marker of the Mabel Lake forest service road. His unoccupied kayak was also located on the lake.
Vernon Search and Rescue and RCMP air services have been called out to assist in the search for Keeley. He's described as a Caucasian man, 6'2" tall, 181 lbs., with a bald head and hazel eyes. No clothing description or photo of Keeley is available at this time according to RCMP.
Anyone who has information about Keeley's whereabouts are asked to call Lumby RCMP at 250-547-2151.
