Search continues for Alberta man presumed drowned in Kamloops

The search for a 50-year-old Alberta, man presumed drowned in the North Thompson River in Kamloops, continued today.

Stan Cappis of Red Deer was swept away in the river Friday afternoon, July 12, near the Tournament Capital Ranch.

RCMP said in a media release today, July 17, Cappis had been at the river with several youths when two of them stepped off a sandbar into the swift current and were carried down river.

Cappis and his friend jumped into the fast-moving water to rescue them.

“Stan’s friend and the youths were able to get to the shore however Stan was swept away. He was last seen rounding the bend of the river,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in the release.

Despite a search by RCMP officers, a police dog, RCMP air services, firefighters and the public, Cappis wasn’t found.

“Efforts will continue throughout the day today with the RCMP contingent being bolstered by Kamloops Search and Rescue,” Staff Sgt. Shoihet said.

RCMP describe Cappis as a 50-year-old Caucasian man with an athletic build and dark hair. He was wearing shorts and sunglasses.

Anyone who lives in and around the area of the North Thompson River south of the Tournament Capital Ranch are asked to keep an eye out for Cappis and to report any information to Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000, citing file 2024-22138.
