The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team has the busiest day of the year yesterday with two rescue operations and a cheque presentation.

Starting at 10 a.m., group members attended a cheque celebration for $17,000 that will go towards a new rescue hall and training.

At 12:30 p.m., the group was contacted by Penticton Search And Rescue to help find a missing person the Summerland area, according to a press release issued by the group.

Eight COSAR members, including a dog team, responded and joined around a dozen volunteers from South Okanagan rescue groups.

It was only two hours later that the rescue group was called to rescue four hikers in Okanagan Mountain Park.

The young men had hiked up from Naramata and had nearly made the summit when one fell through a snow bridge and became soaked in the creek underneath, according to COSAR.

"He became hypothermic as they tried to finish their trek to the cabin at Divide Lake so they called for help," said Edward Henczel, communications officer with the group, in the press release.

The team was able to rescue them by staging a helicopter at Bertram Creek Park.

This was the 10th task of 2022 for COSAR.

The group is reminding residents to bring 10 essentials, including a personal locator beacon, in case there’s no cell coverage.
