A sod-turning ceremony is set to be held Saturday morning at the site of the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan.

A committee comprising the players' families, board members with the junior hockey team, city councillors and others says it is ready to move ahead with the first phase of building a permanent memorial at the crash site to honour the victims.

The first phase will involve preparing the site, including earth moving, and the creation of pathways and a sitting area.

The City of Humboldt has said details of a planned monument at the site will be released before the end of the year.

In 2018, a truck driver barrelled through a stop sign and into the path of the hockey team's bus at a rural intersection near Tisdale, Sask.

Sixteen people on the bus were killed and 13 were injured.
