Salmon Arm Mounties honoured at provincial awards

SALMON ARM - Several Salmon Arm Mounties have been recognized for their work with the top award for police officers.

The Police Honours Night was held earlier this week at Government House in Victoria where dozens of police officers across the province were given awards.

Six officers were given the award of valour for rescuing a distraught and suicidal man armed with a knife from his burning home in Salmon Arm.

Cpl. Richard Gingras, now with the Vernon Police Dog Service, Const. Patrick Evanishen, Const. David Goodyear, Const. Trevor Medernach, Const. Adam Poitras and Const. David Warner, now with the Enderby detachment, were given the award.

The provincial government says in a news release Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon and Public Safety and Solicitor General Minister Mike Farnworth presented the awards to officers from municipal forces and RCMP detachments.

Overall, 42 officers received the award of valour which is the highest award for a police officer in B.C. The province says these officers showed exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect people from harm.

Nearly 79 officers were given honours for meritorious service, which recognize exemplary performance that answered the call to service in exceptional ways.
