A clean make-up business in the Shuswap  continues to grow in leaps and bounds.

Missy MacKintosh opened MisMack Clean Cosmetics in Salmon Arm in the spring of 2021, and after experiencing a whopping increase in sales was able to open a second outlet in Victoria in fall of the same year.

In early February, after submitting a successful application to be on the CBC television show Dragons’ Den, MacKintosh spoke with the producers and ended up working with one who agreed to help her perfect her pitch video. That fell apart when the producer left Dragons' Den to work on Family Feud Canada.

“So far everything has gone well, they got the products and were going to pitch us to the executive,” she said. “We reapplied and have another audition. We find out in two weeks if everything is confirmed, then we’ll fly to Toronto.”

MacKintosh learned this month she has been nominated by members in her community for an award under the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards program.

It’s a premier national awards program that has been celebrating the achievements of the most successful women entrepreneurs for three decades. Thousands of women have been nominated and recognized for demonstrating excellence across the country and MacKintosh is hoping to be one of them.

“I feel like I am always nominated but never quite win, like I’m always the bridesmaid but never the bride,” she said. “This award would mean a lot to me and the community who is so encouraging.”

There is a hefty amount of paperwork a nominee must complete as part of the process.

“It is a lot of work for the nominees but I don’t mind because in the end, being nominated is an honour,” Mackintosh said. “Applications go to a panel of judges who decide who wins. I was nominated for an Innovation Award.”

Award announcements and gala celebrations take place in the fall.

“I get amazing feedback from the community,” MacKintosh said. “People come into the store just to share the excitement of the Dragon’s Den audition and the business award. The amount of positive feedback I get is always overwhelming.”

Both her outlets are busy and there is no sign business will be slowing down anytime soon. She is grateful to her friends, family, employees and community for her successes.

MacKintosh does the formulating, branding, marketing and sales for her products. She said the secret to her success is in the products, which are designed to be friendly on the environment and skin.

Her goal is to have five stores across Canada, one in Paris, one in England and one in Los Angeles.
