A business owner from Salmon Arm is winning awards and seeing her sales skyrocket as her line of clean makeup products expands.
MisMack Clean Cosmetics opened its first store in Salmon Arm this spring and is already opening a second location in Victoria yesterday, Sept. 2. after reportedly experiencing a whopping increase in sales this past year.
CEO Missy MacKintosh has done the formulating, the branding, marketing and sales for her products and appears to have a limitless supply of energy to devote to her passion.
"I always knew I wanted to have my own business one day," MacKintosh said. "I started this business from my basement in 2017. The whole line was out in 2019, but the pandemic set me back. I don't have formal business education but grew up in an entrepreneurial household."
She started working with makeup when she was very young. She sold Mary Kay products when she was 18 before going to Vancouver and graduating with honours from the makeup program at Blanch McDonald. She then went on to work in Calgary at MakeUp Forever before returning home to Canoe, near Salmon Arm, to start her own business.
Her biggest achievement has been winning global clean beauty awards for two years in a row.
"Last year we won for best eyeshadow and this year we took second for best eyeshadow and second for lipstick," she said. "It's a lipstick my grandmother designed and the colour is called Patty Mae, after her."
The secret to her success is in the products, which are designed to be friendly on the environment and skin.
"I wanted products that met up with my high standards for clean beauty, so I worked with a chemist directly to create all of my formulas," she said. "All of our products are ethically sourced and they are multifunctional, which cuts down on wasteful packaging and ingredients. We are one of the only brands in North America that offers biodegradable glitter. Our proprietary ingredient is derived from fatty acids from coconut oil."

MacKintosh advertised the opening of the second store last month on social media by doing a selfie-contest, and provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry was the first to enter.
"I was at a restaurant across the street from the new location with a friend last month and we saw Dr. Bonnie Henry walk by," she said. "My friend ran over and told her about my new business and asked her to take a selfie with me. Dr. Henry was so sweet and humble, and we ended up giving her products."
"My executive educator in sales has been my right hand since COVID and she will be running the second store while I go back and forth. We are offering complimentary pampering sessions all day everyday so people can experience the products before purchasing. We are receiving tons of interest."
MacKintosh wants five stores across Canada, one in Paris, one in England and one in LA.
"The only limitation is your imagination," she said.
