Rockets' Thurkauf to captain Team Switzerland at world juniors

Calvin Thurkauf has been named as Team Switzerland's captain for the upcoming world junior tournament.

Calvin Thurkauf will serve as captain for Team Switzerland at the upcoming 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto.

Team Switzerland made the announcement on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old from Zug, Switzerland has 17 goals and 31 points in 28 games with the Rockets this season and has been tearing up the score sheet in the WHL as of late.

Thurkauf played in the World Juniors last season for Switzerland as well, recording a goal and an assist in five games.

In his final four games with the Rockets prior to this years World Juniors, Thurkauf scored eight goals accompanied with two assists, and was awarded WHL player of the week status.

Thurkauf and the Swiss begin the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship Dec. 27 against the Czech Republic.

Kelowna Rockets teammate, Tomas Soustal, plays for the Czech's.

Dillon Dube is also playing in the tournament, as a member of the Canadian Junior team.

The Rockets will be without those three players when they take home ice again on December 27th when they host the Kamloops Blazers at Prospera Place.
