Emergency crews had their work cut out for them yesterday in the Revelstoke area. There were three serious crashes, one in Revelstoke and two on the Trans-Canada Highway, plus a hiker who'd fallen at a nearby waterfall needed rescuing.

According to a Revelstoke RCMP media release, a motorcyclist rear-ended a vehicle that had slowed due to traffic congestion on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Enchanted Forest, 33 kilometres west of Revelstoke.

RCMP say at around 1:50 p.m. yesterday, Aug. 22, a westbound vehicle slowed down due to congestion when it was rear-ended by a westbound motorcycle. The motorcyclist was treated for non-life threatening injuries and no charges were laid.

Less than two hours later at 3:30 p.m. a Toyota SUV travelling eastbound crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a westbound SUV. The 58-year-old driver of the Toyota was ticketed for driving without due care. RCMP do not say in the release whether the passengers of either vehicle sustained any injuries.

Later that afternoon first responders were called again to another two-vehicle crash at Douglas Street and Wright Street in Revelstoke. At 5:20 p.m. an SUV travelling westbound was struck by a southbound SUV from Oregon at the intersection. A 35-year-old driver from Oregon was issued a ticket for failing to yield at a stop sign.

Early that day first responders together with Search and Rescue staff rescued a 26-year-old Saskatchewan man who had lost his footing near the bank of Begbie Falls and fallen a considerable distance landing at the base of the falls. Rescue workers used a backboard to carry the hiker up a cliff where he was then transported to Queen Victoria Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Revelstoke RCMP are asking motorists to be especially vigilant on the roadways at this time of year and to expect congestion.

A second crash happened in downtown Revelstoke, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019.
