The snowy City of Revelstoke broke a single-day snowfall record yesterday.

The 17 centimetres that landed was the most to ever fall on the city on any Jan. 7 since record keeping began in 1898, according to Gregg Walters, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

The previous record was 15 cm and it was set in 2009.

The city is known for getting extra-snowy winters. Revelstoke Mountain Resort claims to hold the Canadian record for the most snowfall in a single winter at 2,438 cm, set in 1971-1972.

Walters said Revelstoke’s location, sitting to the west of the slopes of the Selkirk mountains, is an area where air tends to unload its precipitation as it crosses the Interior.
