The new riding of Kelowna Centre has its first candidate for the upcoming provincial election.

Retired thoracic surgeon Michael Humer is running to be BC United’s candidate for the 2024 BC election in the newly created riding of Kelowna Centre, according to a media release issued yesterday, Oct. 30.

“I have been committed to delivering access to the highest quality care throughout my career. Now I want to see the whole community thrive,” Humer said in the release.

Humer practiced medicine in Kelowna for 20 years. He has organized fundraising events such as the Terry Fox Run and the KGH Foundation’s Bike and Braai, and he served as a board member and president of the Central Okanagan Hospice Association.

He has high ambitions for the riding and, should he be elected, hopes to bring these issues to Victoria to rightfully represent Kelowna Centre.

“I want to focus the compassion, collaboration and energy I brought to healthcare on the challenges we face in Kelowna: the high cost of housing and living, the mental health and wellness of our population, individual safety concerns, and preserving our natural spaces,” Humer said. “When we strengthen one part of our system, that exerts positive impacts on others.”

He was the Chief of Surgery at KGH during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am in awe at how our teams pulled together in the uncertainty and chaos of that crisis to continue to care for our patients when we were stretched thin by the demand on the system and our capacity to meet it. I’ve seen Kelowna come together in other crises too, like this year’s wildfires. It’s what we do. I will continue to serve Kelowna, and to make us stronger and more resilient for the challenges we face now and in the future.”

Humer is the first nominee for the BC United candidacy in Kelowna Centre. The candidate will be chosen in a riding association internal election for which a date has not been set.

The BC election is set to take place on or before Oct. 19, 2024.
