BC SPCA animal protection officers seized a puppy from an abusive situation in Kelowna and now it's in a happy home.

The six-month-old cocker spaniel Daisy was rescued on March 25 after allegations of physical abuse, according to a press release from the BC SPCA issued today, May 1. The society is recommending charges.

“The investigating officer was informed the puppy was being kept in a crate in a closet,” BC SPCA senior officer Eileen Drever said in the release. "This puppy endured both physical and psychological abuse. She was only taken outside twice a day to relieve herself, spending approximately 10 hours a day confined to a crate in a dark closet."

Once Daisy was seized it was brought to a veterinarian who discovered she had soft tissue damage and a giardia infection.

“The puppy was very fearful when she first arrived at the animal centre,” BC SPCA Kelowna manager Shannon Paille said in the release. “She would sit at the front of the kennel, but when anyone approached her, she would cower and wiggle around. She wouldn’t let anyone pet her and would lower herself to the ground and back away when anyone tried.”

Gradually the puppy grew less fearful when workers gave her a space where she could feel safe.

“The only way to get her to come out was to give her treats,” Paille said. “We eventually replaced the bed with a crate so she wouldn’t confine herself to such a small space. We placed a blanket over it so she would feel safe... she stopped backing away when someone opened the kennel door, but her body posture remained low, and she displayed submissive behaviour urinating when approached.”

Daisy has been adopted by a family and the adoption will be final once the dog has finished healing and has been spayed.

“Although she was a very nervous dog given everything she has been through, she really settled in with her foster,” Paille said.
