KAMLOOPS - After the wrong material was delivered to the Westsyde pool in Kamloops, the recreation centre’s reopening has fallen behind schedule.
The wrong panels for the pool’s roof deck were delivered and partially installed before the contractor and Kamloops city staff noticed they were wrong. The contractor is now removing the panels and will be installing the correct ones, but that means a delay to the pool, according to a City of Kamloops media release.
The city had hoped to reopen the pool on Family Day in February.
“We are acting on this as quickly as possible but unfortunately a delay in the reopening of the centre is unavoidable at this point,” capital projects manager Darren Crundwell says in the release.
If the wrong panels were left, city technical advisors believe the buildings durability would have been negatively impacted.
The city isn’t responsible for the mistake, and will not have to pay for the changes.
The Westsyde pool was closed in February of 2015 to repair its roof.
Leaks were found and the future of the pool was put into question, but community members lobbied for the roof to be replaced. The project was approved last spring and construction started in July 2016.
