Police took a man into custody following a disturbance that resulted in damage to two police vehicles late last week.

Vernon RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance outside a residence in the 2300 block of 36 Street around 9 p.m. Friday, June 11.

Witnesses helped police identify a suspect involved in the incident who was in the process of departing the scene in a vehicle.

The male driver ignored officer’s efforts to stop the vehicle and drove away, striking two police vehicles and nearly striking an officer who was on foot.

Additional police responded to the incident and were able to contain the vehicle, which was now parked in the driveway of a nearby residence.

The suspect was arrested but continued to ignore police instructions. He was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody without further incident.

"This person’s actions jeopardized the safety of our officers and the public in their attempt to escape. Fortunately, no one was injured and thanks to the decisive action of our officers, they were able to safely intervene and prevent any further risk to the public," Const. Chris Terleski said in a press release issued this morning, June 15.

A 37-year-old Kelowna man is charged with several offences and remains in custody.
