RCMP use DNA evidence to identify suspect in 2016 Kamloops hit and run

KAMLOOPS — RCMP have made an arrest in Prince George in connection to a hit and run that left a jogger seriously injured nearly three years ago in Kamloops.

Police say they arrested Joshua Joseph Pooli, 29, earlier today, March 13 for the 2016 hit and run, according to an RCMP media release.

"In the morning of August 28, 2016, a female jogger was struck by a vehicle on West Athabasca Street," Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in the release. "The driver of the vehicle sped away without stopping or rendering assistance."

Police say the female jogger suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. At the time, officers searched the area extensively and found the suspect vehicle later that same day near the Halston overpass.

"It had been stolen earlier in the morning," Shelkie says.

Despite finding the suspect's DNA inside the vehicle, police were unable to match it with any of the samples in the national DNA databank. However, she says the DNA was recently matched with the suspect who was living in Prince George.

"This is a case where modern police investigative techniques and patience has paid off,” Shelkie says.

Pooli will be transported to Kamloops to face charges of failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
