SUSPECT HAS LENGTHY CRIMINAL HISTORY
KAMLOOPS – Police are still trying to determine if the man arrested in connection to a robbery at Shoppers Drug Mart is connected to several other robberies in town.
Joseph Welsh, born 1980, has been charged with one count of robbery, two counts of possessing stolen property and four counts of possessing a controlled substance.
Welsh is no stranger to the courthouse. He has a long history which includes several theft convictions, using a stolen credit card, and possessing and trafficking a controlled substance. He was recently released from a five year prison term.
“We’re certainly looking at the other incidents that have been reported and trying to determine if there’s any linkages there. There’s more investigation that needs to be done,” said RCMP Superintendent Brad Mueller.
The four other robberies in town, includes McCleaners on Tranquille and the Adultz store.
Workers at both stores declined comment.
Michael Huitema, a pharmacist and owner of the Shoppers Drug Mart on Summit Drive says he asked RCMP if the suspect is connected to the other incidents, but only heard RCMP say the number of robberies in a short time is “pretty unusual.”
Welsh is currently in custody at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre. He will appear in court by video conference on May 15.
