A holiday package thief in the Kootenays is now in the spotlight thanks to a doorbell camera system and a curious homeowner.

When a Castlegar gift-giver didn’t receive their package despite confirmation from the delivery company, they reviewed security footage from their doorbell surveillance system, according to an RCMP media release.

The camera caught a thief on Dec. 17, 2019, who walked up to the porch and stole the package in Grinch-like fashion.

RCMP say the thief is a Caucasian man wearing an Under Armour hoodie, beige pants, black hooded jacket, black gloves and a pair of sunglasses over a black hat. After nabbing the package, he is seen heading towards another individual waiting down the roadway.

“Digital surveillance cameras strategically installed in doorways can greatly assist investigators in identifying suspects, and can effectively deter crime," Castlegar RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Monty Taylor says in the media release.

“If local residents are expecting a package delivery while they are away from their home, police suggest that they seek the assistance of a trustworthy neighbour or ask the delivery driver to conceal the item in a pre-arranged location.”

If you know who this porch thief is, contact the Castlegar RCMP at 250-365-7721, or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
