RCMP constable in B.C. takes force's process server to court for defamation

VANCOUVER - An RCMP officer who is suing the force for harassment and abuse is now suing one of the force's process servers for defamation.

In a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Const. Karen Katz alleges Norman Hofmann defamed her while trying to serve her with RCMP papers, and then damaged her reputation again in a written report to the RCMP.

She alleges Hofmann told her building manager that her car had been involved in a hit-and-run accident and then told the force she was avoiding being served with legal documents.

None of the allegations have yet been proven in court, and Hofmann, who could not be contacted, has not filed a statement of defence.

RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen says the force isn't commenting on the issue because it is between Katz, Hofmann and the court.

Katz has launched two civil lawsuits against the RCMP, alleging harassment by one of her colleagues and widespread harassment and abuse throughout her career, but they are allegations the force has denied in two statements of defence.
