KELOWNA – Police in the Central Okanagan handed out $368 tickets to more than 80 drivers during a crack down on distracted driving last week.
The drivers were allegedly using an electronic device while behind the wheel, according to a RCMP media release.
During four and a half hours of enforcement on Friday, Nov. 25, officers issued 64 fines. Of those, 46 were for use of an electronic device while driving. The rest were for failing to wear a seat belt and not having a valid driver’s licence.
“Our traffic enforcement officers were surprised when, within a one-hour period, they issued three distracted driving violation tickets, to three different drivers each operating a company vehicle and all of whom were employed by the same Kelowna based business,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in the release.
Earlier in the week on Nov. 22, officers specifically targeted drivers using their cell phones.
O’Donaghey says they caught 36 people illegally using an electronic device while driving and each one was fined $368.
“By taking your attention off of the roadway for even just a moment you greatly increase the chance of being involved in a collision,” he says in the release.
