Vernon RCMP have cordoned off a downtown park following the discovery of a suspicious device.

According to a Vernon RCMP media release, police located the suspicious device at 3:15 p.m. today, June 12, at Justice Park opposite the Vernon courthouse on the corner of 30 Avenue and 27 Street.

"As a precaution, police contacted the RCMP explosive disposal unit and decided the best course of action is for explosive disposal unit to safely deal with the device," the RCMP release states.

Vernon RCMP say the park has cordoned off with police tape while officers wait for the explosive disposal unit to arrive.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area while they deal with the situation.
