The RCMP is asking young people between the ages four to 14 across Canada to help name the newest police dog cadets in the 2023 Name the Puppy Contest.
Names are needed for 13 new German shepherd puppies at the police dog training centre in Innisfail, Alberta, according to an RCMP media release.
Every year the names must start with a new letter, this year the letter is ‘S’ and should be “original and creative names these dogs can wear with pride” as they serve Canadian communities, RCMP said.
“In 2019, a student from Rayleigh was one of 13 winners after his suggested name of Marlow was chosen,” Kamloops RCMP dog handler Cpl. Steve Prior said in the release.

Contest winners and the winning names will be announced on April 6 on the RCMP website and on social media.
A winner from each province and territory will be chosen and receive a laminated photo of the pup they named, a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP water bottle.
Only kids in Canada between the ages of 4 and 14 can enter and contestants can only submit one name suggestion. The name must start with the letter 'S', be 1 or 2 syllables and have no more than nine letters.
The contest runs until March 16 and all entries must be submitted using the online form here.
