KAMLOOPS - Fall is ending on a stormy note in Kamloops with wind, rain and snow in the forecast today.
Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says the best travel day for motorists heading for the coast between now and Christmas appears to be Friday, Dec. 21, as another system is making it’s way towards the Interior for Saturday, and another expected on Monday.
“We’re into an active weather pattern right now,” he says, adding chances of a white Christmas in the valley bottom is still iffy, but people living at higher elevations may see some snow on the ground by Christmas Day.
Special weather statements advising of high winds today, Dec. 20, are in effect for the South Thompson and Okanagan, with snowfall and winter storm warnings on upper elevation highways.
The forecast calls for a cloudy day today in Kamloops with a 40 per cent chance of showers and east winds at 30 km/h gusting to 50, and a high of 9 Celsius.
Tonight, a 40 per cent chance of showers continues, with a few wet flurries or rain showers and possible local snowfall accumulations of two centimetres. Winds are expected to shift to the southwest at 50 km/h gusting to 80 before becoming west at 30 km/h gusting to 50 later in the evening, with a low of 1 C.
Expect a mix of sun and cloud tomorrow with west winds at 20 km/h, a high of 4 C and a low of -3C.
Periods of snow are anticipated for Saturday with a high of 0 C and a low of -1 C.
Sunday will be cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers and a high of 2 C.
For Christmas Eve on Monday expect more clouds and a high of 1 C.
Normal temperatures at this time of year in Kamloops are highs of -1 C and lows of -7 C.
