A public hearing set for mid-January regarding medical marijuana grow-op zoning in Kamloops was postponed Tuesday after new information from the federal government regarding proposed marijuana medical purposes regulations.

"We have to keep in mind that when staff first brought this forward, staff were trying to be proactive," said Mayor Peter Milobar.

"Since that time, we actually have a bit more information."

The public hearing was to be held in light of pending federal legislative changes regarding the commercialization of licensed medical marijuana and phasing out of residential neighbourhood grow-ops.

"On Dec. 16 the federal government announced it's implementation timeline for making changes to the way Canadians access medical marijuana," said Marvin Kwiatkowski, director of development and engineering services.

"The recommendation is that council postpone holding the public hearing until late Spring 2013."

By withholding the hearing, the public can both review proposed federal regulations in detail as well as provide feedback until Feb. 28.

"I imagine, the general public, this is the first they're hearing about this," said Coun. Tina Lange.

While Coun. Nelly Dever had a list of questions to send to Health Canada regarding the new legislation, Coun. Marg Spina recommended tabling the decision until next week to allow for public input.

The proposed regulations can be viewed online. Residents with input can contact the city.

The topic is expected to return at the next regular council meeting, Jan. 22.
