Provincial crib tournament happening this weekend at Summerland Legion

The 2023 B.C.-Yukon Crib Provincials at the Summerland Legion.

Cribbage-playing Legion members from around B.C. are in Summerland this weekend for an annual tournament that sends the winning team to nationals.

Eleven teams travelled from as far as Vancouver Island and the East Kootenays for the 2023 B.C.-Yukon Crib Provincials.

Jerry Carter and Harry James drove from Clearwater to represent the Thompson-Nicola Legion.

“We love playing cribbage and it’s provincials in terms of the Legion, so we though, ah that’d be fun,” Carter said. "This is an impressive building – we're not used to seeing a kitchen and entertainment area, because we have a small Legion in Clearwater."

As university graduates who majored in math, they both love statistics, and that comes in handy in crib.

However, “Crib is the one game that defies statistics – because no matter what you think is going to happen, it doesn’t,” James joked.

And although the winning team advances to the national tournament next month in Cochrane, Alberta, James said the main reason so many people traveled across the province is for the fun and camaraderie.
