KAMLOOPS - Skeetchestn Indian Band is set to receive $30,000 from the province to create and develop a community-based energy plan.

The funding for the Skeetchestn Indian Band comes from the First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund, according to a B.C. government media release.

Raising awareness about energy use, and studying community opportunities for energy efficiency and independence are all part of the plan.

The release states the plan will allow the band to seek green energy options like solar and wind energy, to improve energy efficiency of houses and buildings, to improve waste facilities and to create a composting business. Work with industry and post-secondary institutions to improve capacity in the community for skills like home energy audits is also included in the plan.

"Our community energy plan reflects the importance the Skeetchestn people place on reducing our carbon footprint, living sustainably and using the renewable natural resources within our territory," Skeetchestn Indian Band chief Chief Ronald Ignace says in the release. "Our people set the priorities of this plan and ensured it aligns with our traditions, laws and culture, and will continue to guide what comes next to achieve energy independence."
