Protect yourself with a flu shot

UBC Okanagan’s Associate Vice President Administration and Finance Michael Shakespeare keeps an eye on fourth-year nursing student Hailley Gibbs as she administers his flu shot. Gibbs and second-year medical student Julia Hassler are part of UBC’s flu crew and they will be dispensing flu shots at the two on-campus flu clinics.

KELOWNA - Forget roll up the rim, it’s roll up the sleeve time.

In an effort to keep the campus healthy, UBC’s Health, Safety, and Environment team, in partnership with the School of Nursing, the Southern Medical Program, and Safeway Pharmacy, will provide influenza information and vaccination clinics to the university community during Thrive Week, November 4 to 8.

Flu clinics will be held in the Administration building foyer on Monday, November 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursday, November 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

These clinics support a dynamic collaboration of students, faculty, and staff working together to help reduce the likelihood of employees catching the flu this season, says UBC Health and Safety Advisor Jason McLeod.

The flu vaccine is free to faculty, staff, and students during flu clinic times -- just remember to wear a short-sleeved shirt and don’t forget to bring your BC Services Card or CareCard.

McLeod says people should look for the flu crew; volunteers in brightly coloured t-shirts across campus during the next few weeks. The flu crew is a collaboration of fourth-year nursing and second-year medical students who want to help the campus community make an informed decision about flu prevention. They hope to help employees understand how serious the illness can be and how the risk of acquiring and spreading the flu can be minimized.
