B.C.'s medical health officer says problem gambling has more than doubled

VANCOUVER - British Columbia's medical health officer says the number of severely addicted gamblers has more than doubled in province.

In a report that includes data collected between 2002 and 2007, Dr. Perry Kendall says the number of people with a severe gambling problem has risen from 13,000 to more than 31,000.

While problem gamblers remain a minority in B.C., Kendall says their increase, plus a rise in riskier gambling opportunities are concerning.

While the province has implemented various prevention and treatment programs, Kendall says more gaming revenue needs to go towards additional programs and research.

The report was released a day after Las Vegas-based Paragon Development Ltd. held an open house to present its plans to develop a $535-million casino resort next to BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

The so-called "urban resort" still needs to be approved by the City of Vancouver, but it is expected to include two luxury hotels, a conference centre, restaurants, spa and retail space, as well as incorporate an existing casino.
