A Princeton firewood company has been fined $27,000 after WorkSafeBC found an employee working too close to a spinning blade.
According to an Oct. 31 WorkSafeBC decision, Princeton firewood manufacturer SBC Firemaster got a $26,646 fine after an inspection found the company had violated numerous safety protocols.
"WorkSafeBC inspected the worksite and observed a worker who was operating a chop saw in proximity to the spinning blade," the decision reads. "WorkSafeBC determined that the firm's lockout procedures were not specific to the chop saw being operated and did not include steps to effectively lock out the saw and de-energize the hydraulics that raised and lowered the saw."

The decision says that the company failed to ensure that production machinery was secured against movement.
"The firm also failed to ensure that energy-isolating devices were secured in the safe position using locks in accordance with procedures made available to workers," the decision reads.
WorkSafeBC says the infractions were both high-risk violations.
No other details were given in the decision.
