Prenatal clinic opens at Kamloops hospital

The Interior Health Authority just opened a midwifery clinic at Royal Inland Hospital.

Patients without family doctors can get referrals to the clinic, where they can get regular care before giving birth, according to an Interior Health news release issued today, June 6.

The health authority says expecting patients can get referrals to the Midwifery Antenatal Care Clinic from the Urgent and Primary Care centre, midwives, nurse practitioners or family doctors.

Anyone who has had initial appointments at the Urgent Care clinic should already be added to a referral list, and patients on the list should expect a phone call by June 19, Interior Health said.

The announcement comes as the Thompson Region Family Obstetrics Clinic faces closure due to a lack of doctors. It was expected to stop taking patients beyond July 31 due dates.

An online petition to keep that maternity clinic open was presented to legislature in April by petition creator Amanda Yaschuk.

Although both the maternity clinic and Interior Health's new clinic are located at Royal Inland Hospital, the news release did not mention the planned closure.

A spokesperson was not immediately able to comment on whether Interior Health is replacing the one formerly run by the Thompson Region Division of Family Practice.

Anyone seeking more information can contact the Midwifery Antenatal Care Clinic at 250-314-2782.
