Preliminary results show Teresa Durning as newest Vernon councillor

Preliminary results show Teresa Durning as Vernon's newest city councillor.

The preliminary results for a byelection to determine Vernon's newest councillor are in.

Preliminary results from ballots cast in advance, mail-in, and regular polls in Vernon indicate Teresa Durning will be Vernon's next councillor, according to the City of Vernon. A byelection was held Dec. 4, to replace former Coun. Dalvir Nahal's spot.

Nahal died Sept. 5 after a long battle with cancer. She was active with the Sikh Temple and also organized the annual Bollywood fundraiser in support of local charities. She was born in India and raised in Vernon.

Durning gathered 443 votes, followed by Catherine Lord with 429, Ed Stranks with 244 and Stephanie Hendy with 107. Kevin Demers gathered 103 votes, Jamie Morrow gathered 83, Sherrilee Franks had 76, Erik Olesen had 59, Flora Evans had 53, Arthur Gourley had 28 and Andy Wylie had six. 

"The preliminary results are based on the ballot accounts prepared at each voting place and are subject to determination of official election results by the chief election officer Keri-Ann Austin," according to a press release issued by the city.

These results will be confirmed Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Preliminary results and final results will be posted on the City of Vernon's website.
