KELOWNA – On the on- month anniversary of the discovery of her murdered body in a Kelowna orchard, friends and family of Russia Nicholson will gather at a downtown venue to celebrate her life.

An orchard worker found Russia Nicholson’s body around 11 a.m. Oct. 11 and police were quick to call it a homicide. No cause of death has been released but the investigation is ongoing.

She was 23 years old, five months pregnant with her first child and trying to start a new life, according to family.

A private funeral was held for her last week, but on Nov. 10 those unable to attend will have a chance to say a final farewell.

The Habitat on Leon Avenue is sponsoring a night in her honour, with proceeds going to Russia’s family to help pay funeral and travel expenses. Brianna Winrow, a close friend of Russia’s, has organized the event.

“Russia was a beautiful soul who touched many lives in our community,” she writes on the Facebook event page. “When she walked into a room, everyone knew. Although known for her strength of character, those who knew her well saw a gentle, kind and loving side."

There will be a 50/50 draw and live music.

“I know Russia would have wanted us all to come together and celebrate her life and all the memories we shared with her,” Winrow writes.
