A Kelowna woman vying for a seat on the Central Okanagan Public Schools Board of Education is encouraging others to avoid wearing masks indoors.
Chelsea Frank, who previously ran for a spot on the school board in 2018, recently promoted the use of a fake medical exemption card as she walked through Kelowna’s Walmart in an anti-COVID-19 restriction Facebook group called “Kelowna Free Parents,” which lists her husband Jeff Frank as an administrator.
“Just did my first face free, maskless shopping trip at Walmart. Greeter is the end all at that store. She looked at my card and said, ‘good for you, nobody should say (anything) to you, if they do tell them I said it’s ok,’" she said, showing a photo of herself maskless while walking down the aisle.
“Freedom feels amazing,” she wrote.
A video posted to her personal Facebook page also shows Jeff promoting her school trustee campaign at a recent COVID-19 anti-restriction rally standing next to controversial anti-mask protester Chris Saccoccia. Saccoccia has since been arrested in Thunder Bay, Ont. after speaking at a protest.
Known as Chris Sky online, Saccoccia stopped in Kelowna last Thursday April 22 as part of a cross-Canada tour to end COVID-19 restrictions, leading Saskatchewan premier Scott Moe to condemn his actions.
She declined to comment on her campaign because her nomination papers have yet to be filed, though she has set up a Facebook page. She said her platform will have nothing to do with her personal opinion around COVID-19 mask regulations and vaccines.
Frank said she’s open to speaking with parents and she’s still standing on her same platform that she ran with previously, prior to the pandemic.
The nomination period for the Board of Education by-election to replace former school trustee Rolli Cacchioni opens May 11, with a declaration of candidates announced May 25.
Cacchioni died March 4 after suffering from a stroke.
General voting day is June 26.
Jeff could not be immediately reached for comment.
