Portable toilet fire in Vernon area spread to hedge, threatened homes

FILE PHOTO

Someone lit a portable toilet on fire in the Vernon area early this morning and the flames spread to a nearby hedge.

Firefighters were called to the porta-potty fire at approximately 5:40 a.m. today, July 23, on Westkal Road on the north end of Kalamalka Lake in Coldstream, according to an RCMP media release.

Fire crews put out the fire before it reached any of the nearby homes.

“At this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown but it is considered suspicious,” Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

“We’re asking residents living in the area to check their home surveillance for anything suspicious between 5 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. If you notice anything, or were out and about around that time and noticed anything, please give us a call.”

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact the Vernon RCMP at 250-545-7171 and quote file #2024-12271.
