Smoky skies are forecast to continue in Kamloops and the Okanagan for the next day or two at least, but there has been a reprieve this morning, Aug. 23.

The particulate matter reading for Kamloops fell from almost 1,000 micrograms per cubic metre of air earlier this week to a mere 10.6 this morning. A reading of 12 is seen as acceptable.

Vernon is the smokiest part of the Okanagan with a reading of 23.8. In Kelowna it dropped to 2.3 and Penticton was reading 5.3.

The Air Quality Health Index was rated as low risk in Kamloops and the Okanagan but is forecast to rise to moderate later today and tomorrow.

There was 4.6 mm of rain in Kelowna yesterday, the first recorded rainfall since July 25. While there have been various reports of rain around the region last night, no rain was recorded at weather stations in the other cities. They all saw a bit of rain about two weeks ago.

The Environment Canada online forecast shows a 60% chance of showers throughout the region today with the risk of thunderstorms.

The high temperature is expected to only reach 16 Celsius today in Kamloops, 19 C in the Okanagan.

A clearing and warming trend is forecast through the weekend.
