A recent survey has found that 40% of Canadians believe in haunted houses.

According to a Research Co. poll, 39% of Canadians say they "definitely" or "probably" believe in haunted houses, a seven percentage point increase since a similar survey 18 months ago.

And where someone lives in Canada is likely to affect whether they believe in them or not.

"At least two-in-five residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (46%), Alberta (40%) and Quebec (40%) believe in haunted houses," Research Co. president Mario Canseco said in a media release issued, June 16. "The proportions are lower in Atlantic Canada (38%), British Columbia (37%) and Ontario (36%)."

While two in five Canadians believe in haunted houses, they're more skeptical about other supernatural occurrences.

Mediumship, the ability to connect with the spirits of dead people, is believed by 32% of the population, while clairvoyance, the ability to gain information about an object, person, location or physical event through extrasensory perception, is believed by 31%.

More than a third of women, 36%, believe in mediumship and 34% believe in clairvoyance.

That number dropped slightly for men, with 28% of men believing in mediumship and 29% in clairvoyance.

While 35% of Canadians believe in astrology, only 17% say they pay attention to it.

Astrology is most popular in the prairies with 43% of people in Saskatchewan and Manitoba buying into it, and 42% in Alberta. That number drops significantly in BC to 27%.

The majority of Canadians, 55%, say they've never paid attention to astrology, with that number jumping to 60% for men and 63% of those who voted Conservative in the last federal election.

The younger generation is more likely to believe in astrology with 45% of those aged 18-to-34 saying they do, while 24% of them say they pay attention to it.
