Police watchdog investigating after off-duty officer involved in serious Highway 99 collision

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating after one person was air-lifted to the hospital in critical condition following a crash on Highway 99 involving an off-duty officer.

A Pemberton RCMP officer was travelling northbound in his personal vehicle on Highway 99 near the Soo River Forest Service Road when a crash occurred between his vehicle and a southbound vehicle just before 7 a.m. this morning, Feb. 21, according to the RCMP's press release.

The officer was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The other driver, and only occupant of the other vehicle, was air lifted to a larger area hospital in critical condition.

The Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service has been called to investigate the collision, while the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the driver’s injuries.

Currently the highway remains closed for roughly three kilometres south of Pemberton. Drivers are asked to take an alternate route, or delay travel until the roadway has reopened, according to the RCMP. For the most up to date highway information visit DriveB.C.

The RCMP is not commenting further on the matter as the investigation is with the Independent Investigations Office.
