VANCOUVER - Police in Vancouver say an officer on patrol was slashed on the leg with an "edged weapon" in the city's Downtown Eastside.

A statement from the Vancouver Police Department says the officer was on foot patrol with his partner near East Hastings and Main streets just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday when he was approached from behind by a suspect and injured.

Police say the suspect fled on foot but was arrested minutes later a block away.

The statement says the officer was taken to hospital and has since been released and is recovering at home.

Police say a 29-year-old suspect has been charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and assault of a peace officer with a weapon.

He remains in custody until his next court appearance
