Police presence at second Kamloops home after Sunday shooting

Kamloops RCMP raided a home on Cornwall Street on May 23, 2023, as part of an investigation into a shooting this weekend.

Kamloops RCMP officers raided a North Shore home yesterday in relation to a weekend shooting.

Neighbours watched as police rushed in and surrounded the Cornwall Street house around 4 p.m. yesterday, May 23, with rifles drawn but they weren't aware of why.

Two neighbours said they first suspected it was related to a drug investigation or police were seizing stolen property, but Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn confirmed it was related to a shooting in the Brocklehurst neighbourhood, May 21.

Neighbours said a police or bylaw presence is common in the area as they often patrol the street, appearing to be watchful of the home. Two people that spoke with iNFOnews.ca said they haven't had property crime concerns, but they noted the home police searched sees tenants rotating through constantly.

"(The owner) explains she's helping people that aren't getting help from the government or whatever, so she's opened up her home," one neighbour said.

RCMP officers are still securing the property today with at least one vehicle in front of the yard.

Cpl. Evelyn did not say exactly what police are looking for at the property or whether anything was seized.

It comes days after a shooting on Sunday, May 21, that left a woman in her 30s with life-threatening injuries. Police said yesterday she was on life support.

She was shot in a townhouse on the 800 block of Valhalla Drive, where an officer is still stationed to secure the crime scene. The street in front of the home was taped off this morning.

Kamloops RCMP didn't say anything about a suspect in a news release about their response, except to say they believe the incident was isolated, and the shooter and victim likely know each other.

Neighbours that spoke with iNFOnews.ca were "concerned" when they learned the Cornwall Street raid was related to such a violent crime.

They described it as a "problem" house, but have few issues with crime.

The home often hosts many different visitors and it can be noisy, with loud music at early hours of the morning disturbing the street or the sound of mechanical work on vehicles that scatter the lawn.

In August 2020, Kamloops RCMP executed a search warrant on the home and seized multiple stolen bikes, tools and replica firearms, according to a news release at the time.

Both neighbours said the owner was not home when police closed in with guns drawn, but she showed up later in the evening, only to be told she could not enter until police were finished.

Multiple people were escorted out of the property, with some seen speaking with police, but none were arrested and taken away from the property, neighbours said.

Cpl. Evelyn said no one was arrested at the scene and no charges have been laid.
