SALMON ARM - Police in Salmon Arm are warning resident to protect their valuables after an an increase in thefts from vehicles.

Police are investigating a number of thefts from vehicles where thieves have been targeting unlocked vehicles, smashing windows or prying open door locks and handles, Staff Sgt. Scott West says in a release.

Police remind the public to remove all valuables from vehicles, especially purses, wallets and phones.

West says to avoid hiding valuables in vehicles because thieves have been known to watch from a distance to see if you're trying to hide something.

In October, thefts from vehicles within the Salmon Arm city limits are occurring between dusk and dawn, on residential streets and in parking lots.

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious people or activities to their local detachment.
