KELOWNA - Police are investigating a suspicious death after the body of a man was found in the area of Sutherland Avenue and Harvey Avenue.

A witness reported seeing a possible body in Mill Creek at about 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 14th.

When police arrived, they were directed to the area by the witness.

At the Sutherland Ave Carwash adjacent to where the body was found, attendant John Oxley says he often hears people hanging out by the creek.

"There's transients all over the place here. The Gospel Mission... they kick them out at around nine o'clock... come over here, look through our garbage cans, look for bottles," he says, which they cash in over at the bottle depot on Kirschner Road.

"Unfortunate people, the circumstances you don't know, they could have drug problems, there's all kind of social things."

Oxley says he finds all sorts of objects left in the area, including cans beside a makeshift sitting area.

"You name it - soup to nuts.... Sometimes I've found women's clothing there. I say to people: you never know what you find around here," he says. The carwash has been there since 1957 and the facility is open 24hrs a day with an an atttendent on site until 3 p.m.

Not only does the tree-shaded creek provide an oasis on a hot day - but it's also private, Oxley says.

"There's drug transactions here, perfect place to hide... it's off the highway," he says.

Police have yet to confirm the age and identity of the victim and are asking anyone with information about the suspicious death to call Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

You can leave anonymous tips with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.crimestoppers.net or send a text message to CRIMES (274637) ktown.
