Police identify Merritt homicide victim in hopes of advancing investigation

Police have identified a man whose body was found in the Merritt area on Tuesday and the suspicious death is now being investigated as a homicide.

The body of Dennis Michael Walters, 51, of Merritt was found near Nicola Lake just before 8 a.m., Sept. 14, according to an RCMP press release.

B.C. RCMP Southeast District major crimes are conducting the investigation after Merritt RCMP initially responded to the scene.

Police are releasing Walters' name to "move the investigation forward" and create a timeline of the the events leading to his death.

"We are releasing Dennis’ identity in order to help move the investigation forward," B.C. RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in the release. "We are hopeful that in doing so, we can help timeline the events leading up to his death."

Anyone with information about Walters' whereabouts from Monday, Sept. 13 to Tuesday, Sept. 14 when his body was discovered is asked to call the Southeast District Major Crimes Unit tip line at 1-877-987-8477.
