Police concerned over motorist's inattention in school zones

Penticton RCMP are stepping up enforcement in school zones in an effort to get motorists to pay attention to new signage regarding parking and stopping within the zones.

PENTICTON - Motorists are being reminded to pay attention to new signage within school zones in the community.

Penticton RCMP issued a release this week reminding parents and others using school zones that several new regulatory signs are now in effect surrounding certain schools within the local school districts.

Police are concerned many motorists are not obeying the new signage in school zones, noting the additional signage covers parking and stopping in school zones and was placed to make the areas safer for children and pedestrians.

As a result of this lack of attention to the new signage, police say they are increasing enforcement in school zones.

During these additional patrols police came across a 35-year-old Penticton resident who stopped in a crosswalk area yesterday morning. The man was detained for impaired driving, was handed a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and had his vehicle seized.
