KAMLOOPS - Everyone is safe after a trucker managed to escape being held at gunpoint by a hitchhiker near the commercial weigh scales on Highway 5 last night.

Police closed the scales and the highway while they dealt with the incident, according to Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk. He said they were called around 6:30 p.m. about the incident. The commercial truck driver picked up the hitchhiker along Highway 5 near Avola, north of Clearwater, on its way into Kamloops.

The truck was located by police near the weigh scales and stopped. The driver managed to exit unharmed.

"The suspect was eventually taken into custody without incident mid evening," Buliziuk said.

Police closed the highway in both directions while they dealt with what they called a 'high risk incident.'
