Man charged with assaulting a Victoria police officer who was struck by vehicle

Victoria police say a man has been charged after a police officer was struck by a vehicle.

The department says in a news release that the vehicle that struck the officer is alleged to have been stolen.

It says the officer was hit from behind Monday morning while he was standing next to a police vehicle.

They say the driver was arrested at the scene and the officer received serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say 27-year-old Chance Nichol of Nanaimo has been charged with assaulting a police officer with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Police Chief Del Manak says in a statement the officer is a 10-year member of the force and is well respected in the community.
