Give peas a chance: energy company delays pipeline construction through garden
August 15, 2012 - 12:24 PM
EDMONTON - An energy company has decided to delay construction of a portion of pipeline through a community garden near Edmonton so growers can harvest their vegetables.
A spokeswoman for Plains Midstream Canada says work on the oil pipe has been pushed back to Oct. 1.
About 70 people gathered Tuesday at the garden just north of the city to ward off bulldozers set to rumble through the area later this week.
The province has leased 2 1/2 hectares of the land to the gardeners for nearly 20 years.
Some of the produce goes to the Edmonton Food Bank.
Sharon Lopatka with Alberta Infrastructure says the pipeline construction would have affected about a third of the garden.
She says the work should be complete by early next year so the entire garden can be planted again in the spring.
