Penticton's Young Stars Classic hockey tournament scuttled for 2019

PENTICTON - Penticton’s Young Stars Classic hockey tournament will not return to the city this year.

Vancouver Canucks media relations director Ben Brown issued a statement today, Feb. 14, saying the Vancouver Canucks are grateful to the City of Penticton and its fans for support of the tournament since 2010.

“The tournament will not take place in 2019 due to a lack of participating NHL teams,” Brown said in the statement.

The door has been left open for future tournaments, however, as Brown said options for future Young Stars tournaments in Penticton “continue to be explored."

The Winnipeg Jets issued a press release yesterday saying they would not be participating in the tournament this year, opting instead to go to a showcase in Ontario with the Ottawa Senators.

The Jets followed last year’s lead by the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, who dropped out of the tournament in 2018, leaving the Vancouver Canucks as sole team in the tournament.
